New Island Books - 25 Years a-Growing

Submissions

We are open for submissions.

Here at New Island Books we love to read. We love stories – all stories – gorgeous prose, challenging prose and blow-your-face-off weird prose. Most of all we love everything new. The brave, the never-before-tried, the untested, the bewildering.

We’re always on the lookout for brilliant stories, startling prose and quality non-fiction, and you are welcome to send us your manuscript for consideration.

We publish award-winning crime fiction, literary fiction, experimental fiction, short stories and poetry from authors with diverse backgrounds and national origin. The same goes for our award-winning non-fiction – we love powerful memoir/autobiography and essays, Irish interest history and biography.

If you’re interested in submitting to us, you should be familiar with our list.  Do also subscribe to our newsletter, and follow us on social media, to get a feel for the company and what we’re up to.

Please note:

  • We do not publish children’s or young adult books (But Little Island do – find them here).
  • We will not accept submissions of books that have been previously self-published, or sequels to books that have previously been self-published.
  • As much as we would like to, we cannot enter into correspondence on submissions, or individual work.
  • We do not accept or return posted manuscripts.

We firmly believe that good writing is down to re-writing. As such, New Island recommends that you don’t send us the first draft of your work. Once you’ve wrought your original draft into the best form you can on your own, that’s when you should hit send.

We have an open submission policy and we’re proud of it. You don’t need to have an agent – but submissions from agents are also welcome. We actively encourage submissions from women, BAME, disabled, working class and LGBT writers. Please keep in mind that we are a small but sturdy independent press who publish 20-30 books per year. We are unable to respond to submissions quickly, but we will respond to them – if they follow the guidelines below.

We ONLY accept submissions if they adhere to the following guidelines:

  1.  Submissions are sent by email to: editor[AT]newisland.ie
  2.  Submissions emails should include a cover note explaining the origins of the submission, the reason why the author has chosen New Island, as well as the following:
    • a short author biography as a Word document (.doc or .docx) attachment;
    • a one-page synopsis of the book as a Word document (.doc or .docx) attachment;
    • Preferably the full manuscript or poetry collection (and, if Non-Fiction, a chapter breakdown as well) as a Word document (.doc or .docx) attachment.
  1. We have no strict formatting rules, but double-spaced with a sensible, size 12 font would be preferable
  2. Submissions to be emailed with the subject: SUBMISSION: [TITLE OF YOUR WORK & FULL NAME]
Take heart! We know how much blood, sweat & tears it takes to write a book, and to share it with the world. Don’t just submit to us: approach other publishers and literary agents. Keep writing, and good luck.
