‘I love Annie’s work; it’s delicious, insightful, humane and, when called for, savagely critical. The best of her talent is on show in this beautiful book and I can’t recommend it highly enough.’
– Lenny Abrahamson
What if Joyce had never met Nora?
What if Roy Keane had gone back to Saipan?
What If? draws both a moustache and a monobrow onto some of the biggest focal points in history, and challenges the reader to look the other way. These alternative endings bring to life an imaginary world turned upside down by Einstein remaining a violinist, St Bridget inventing the orthodontic retainer, Lincoln losing his theatre tickets, and a living, breathing, eighty-one-year-old Elvis releasing an album with Adele.
These essays are written by charming, gifted authors from Dublin to San Francisco, and coupled with lavishly produced hand-drawn illustrations by Annie West. What If? is a good-natured gallivant through some eccentric alternative endings.

About Annie West: Annie West is an award-winning illustrator and cartoonist. Reared on Ronald Searle, Saul Steinberg and Spike Milligan, Annie graduated from Dun Laoghaire School of Art (IADT) with a degree in TV Production Design. There followed a decade working in the art department on movies, TV and music videos for RTÉ, Channel Four, Robert Plant, and the Hothouse Flowers to name but a few. She edited and illustrated Yeats in Love, an illustrated, semi-fictional account of WB Yeats’ obsessive yet ultimately fruitless pursuit of Maud Gonne (New Island, 2014).
