Sean McCarthy is a Cork-born actor, director and playwright. He joined the Abbey Theatre as an actor, then later became Literary Manager to the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh and Artistic Director to The Young Lyceum. In 1979, he returned to Ireland to work as script editor at the Abbey Theatre. He wrote several plays including Beneath One Banner (1985, Scottish Theatre Company), Childish Things (1981, Abbey), Dixie (1992, Storytellers Theatre Company), Fr Mathew (2007, Yew Tree Theatre and Cork Opera House), God is Good (1975, Royal Lyceum), Rise and Shine (1977, Project Arts Centre), The Fantastical Feats of FINN MacCOOL (1974, Young Lyceum), The Marble Madonna (1987, Kite Productions), and Three Bunches of Blood and a Lump of Fog (1983, Project Arts Centre).He has also written a number of radio and television plays. New Island published his historical novel, Citizen Dwyer in 2011.
