Hans-Christian Oeser, born in 1950 in Wiesbaden, taught German literature and language at UCD and at the Goethe Institute Dublin. An Irish resident since 1980, he works as a literary translator, travel writer, editor and critic. Among his numerous translations are novels, short story and poetry collections by Irish authors such as Brendan Behan, Dermot Healy, Jennifer Johnston, John McGahern, Eoin McNamee and Christopher Nolan. In 1997 he won the Aristeion European Translation Prize for his translation of The Butcher Boy by Patrick McCabe.
