Donncha O’Connell is the senior Irish member of FRALEX, the legal expert group that advises the EU Fundamental Rights Agency based in Vienna. From 2005 to 2008 he was the Dean of Law at NUI Galway, where he continues to teach the following subjects in the School of Law: Constitutional Law, European Human Rights, Processes of Law Reform and Equality Law: Principles and Thematic Application. He was the first full-time director of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties from 1999 to 2002, after which he was appointed to the EU Network of Independent Experts on Fundamental Rights. In the past he has served as a member of the National Council of the Free Legal Advice Centres (FLAC) Ltd and the Executive Committee of Amnesty International Ireland. He is the editor of the Irish Human Rights Law Review (Clarus Press) and a member of the board of directors of the Druid Theatre Company.
